AUSTRALIA'S Grand Mufti Ibrahim Abu Mohamed has met with the hierarchy of Hamas, the Palestinian party listed by the Gillard government as a terrorist organisation.
Last week Dr Mohamed led an Australian delegation of Muslim scholars to the Gaza Strip, where they met Hamas senior political leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Mr Haniyeh, who has been pushing for the US and the EU to remove Hamas from its terrorist watchlist, last year described former al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden as "a Muslim and Arabic warrior" while condemning the US for killing the terrorist leader.
Dr Mohamed, who has been styled as a moderate since taking the top Australian Muslim post, last week expressed his happiness at being in Gaza, describing it as the land of pride and martyrdom.
"I am pleased to stand on the land of jihad to learn from its sons and I have the honour to be among the people of Gaza where the weakness always becomes strength, the few becomes many and the humiliation turns into pride," he told local news agencies.
"We came here in order to learn from Gaza. As I said in my speech, we will make the stones, trees, and people of Gaza talk, in order to learn steadfastness, sacrifice, and the defence of one's rights from them.
"We feel like we are on cloud nine. We feel like we are on top of the world." Images of the visit were shown on local TV and hailed as a PR coup by Hamas, the fanatical ruling party in Gaza.
Attempts to contact Dr Mohamed, who has insisted radical Muslim extremists in Australia need to be corrected, were unsuccessful.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Australia has listed Hamas as a terrorist entity subject to financial sanctions since 2001.
The military wing of Hamas is also listed as a terrorist organisation under the Criminal Code Act 1995.
In July 2009, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, then deputy prime minister, said: "Hamas obviously is a terrorist organisation that has been engaged in violent actions against the Israeli people."
Ms Gillard was unavailable to comment.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr said through a spokesman that the trip had nothing to do with the government.
"It's up to them to explain their own views and travel plans," the spokesman said.
"We have no diplomatic engagement with Hamas."
Last week's delegation, described by the media as one of several "delegations of solidarity", also visited the Ministry of Islamic Endowments and met with religious scholars and sheikhs.

AN AUSTRALIAN man held hostage by militants in the southern Philippines for more than a year has appeared in a video as proof that he is alive.
Warren Richard Rodwell said on the video that he is being held in isolation. He said he understands there are negotiations for his release under way but added, "I personally hold no hope at all for being released."
He said he was kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf, a notorious al-Qaida-linked group.
Philippine intelligence officials said on Wednesday they believe the video, which has been circulated on YouTube, is authentic.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr has welcomed the news Rodwell is still alive, but says his prolonged captivity is of major concern.
Senator Carr said the Philippines government was leading the response to the case and had devoted significant resources to securing Mr Rodwell's release.
"`We are also in regular communication with Mr Rodwell's family,'' Senator Carr said in a statement on Thursday.
"It would not be helpful to Mr Rodwell to comment further.''
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also said it would not be in Mr Rodwell's interests to elaborate on details of the case of its handling.
Rodwell appeared thinner than in a previous video posted in January. He held a copy of a local newspaper dated December 15 and said the recording was made the following day.
Rodwell was abducted by six gunmen on December 5 last year in southern Zamboanga Sibugay province by several armed men who are believed to have fled in speedboats.
Bloodstains were found at the coastal home from which he was taken. A search of nearby islands failed to find any trace of him.
The kidnappers demanded an initial ransom of $US23,000 from his wife, with whom he runs a store in the seaside town of Ipil on Mindanao island.
According to police, Rodwell's wife said she had no way of raising the ransom.

More than 200 Indonesian Muslims threw rotten eggs at Christians wanting to hold a Christmas mass near land outside Jakarta where they plan to build a church, police and a witness said.
Some 100 Christian worshippers intended to hold a mass near empty land where they hope to build a church, about 30 kilometres east of the capital, in a project barred by district government and community members in 2009.
Since then, worshippers from the Filadelfia Batak Christian Protestant have held Sunday services under scorching sun outside the property.
On Christmas day, however, local community members blocked the road near the land, Andri Ananta, a local police chief on Jakarta's outskirts, said.

An AFP photographer witnessed locals - men and women wearing Muslim headscarf, with small children in tow - physically blocking the road and throwing rotten eggs at the gathering worshippers.
Mr Ananta said police managed to convince the Christians to drop their plan and return home.
"We tried our best to avoid any clash and the Christians agreed to leave," he said.
Mr Ananta said 380 police and military personnel including an anti-riot squad were deployed to the area.
Church leader Reverend Palti Panjaitan said the incident came after a Christmas Eve attack on Monday evening when "intolerant people" threw not only rotten eggs but plastic bags filled with urine and cow dung at them.
"Everything had happened while police were there. They were just watching without doing anything to stop them from harming us," he said.
The country's high court last year overruled the district government's 2009 decision, but constant intimidation from Muslims in the area has delayed the church's construction, church officials said.
Indonesia's constitution guarantees freedom of religion but rights groups say violence against minorities including Christians and the Ahmadiyah Islamic sect has escalated since 2008.
Ninety percent of Indonesia's population of 240 million identify themselves as Muslim but the vast majority practise a moderate form of Islam.
